b.27 Dec 1757 Dunster SOM, as near as he could "recollect"!
Departed SOM as a cabin boy of about 14 years of age on a British ship which he left at the Dutch island of Stacia. Went onto an American vessel and was landed at Edenton, North Carolina. He remained there until 1788 and then went to South Carolina and married a lady variously known as Eleanor, Nellie and Mary A.E. There were several children with many of his descendants staying in Lauderdale County Alabama.
The "recollections" were set out in the 1836 testimony at the court of pleas for a Revolutionary War Pension under an Act of Congress of 7 Jun 1832. Karen has a copy of the transcript of testimony. William served as a volunteer seaman on American ships for about 3 years against British warships during the Revolutionary War.

Family Queries
Chris Martin is seeking information and help in finding Ellen SYMONDS (nee SCUTT) and her three children, Elizabeth, Henry and Eliza who were in Fordington (Dorchester) in the 1851 Census. She married Laurence SYMONDS at Wool DOR on 13 Dec 1833 and three children were born to them:
Elizabeth, baptised 15 Apr 1834 at Wool DOR.
Henry, baptised 20 Dec 1835 at Broadmayne DOR
Eliza, baptised 23 Feb 1840 at Fordingham DOR
Laurence Phone Symonds came from a line of Yeoman farmers who can be traced back through Steeple, East Knighton in Winfrith Newburgh, Tincleton and Woodsford Castle, all in DOR. He was a baker in 1833 and 1835, but a labourer in 1840. His elder brother, William Symonds, was still a baker in Wool in the 1881 Census. As stated in the table above, Laurence was convicted for stealing and transported in 1846 for 14 years to Van Diemen's Land from which place he never returned.
Ellen and the three children were living at Grove Buildings in Fordingham DOR at the time of the 1851 Census where she is described as a widow, and working as a button maker. They were not listed at this address in the 1861 Census and have not been found in the 1881 Dorset Census Index.
Chris asks that any information later than 1851 on Ellen and the children would be very welcome but seeks your assistance if you are researching any branch and descendants of this family.
