Nearby? You might well wonder!

The Somerset and Dorset Surname pages have been so successful that there are folk who think that Devon, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Gloucestershire are near enough to S&D that I might stretch a point in putting up their entries! That has not been possible through a lack of space on the existing Web site. Avon is included in S&D of course, from its past associations.

There are also those folk who believe that New Zealand is close enough to Australia that I might also stretch a point. Same argument - same answer! The only ones who do not get a place are those whose ancestors are said to come from somewhere in England. The Web site will not cope with those requests.

The final acceptance decision will remain with the Webmaster who must ensure that the expansion is not too great or too rapid for the available Web space.

This is a one-name study: the centre of gravity is Melksham WIL with a likely locative origin near there. However, concentrations have been in Westbury WIL (150 events 1618-1884), Bradford-on-Avon WIL (150 events 1717-1931) and Bath SOM (32 events 1639-1741 and 225 events 1841-present) with large migrations between them. There are many gaps. Brian would be grateful if anyone has detail from sources other than obvious ones. If you wish to benefit from what he has, please contact him. Brian Otridge

Family Queries

Geri R. Gilbert has a BENFIELD family who had three members, William Henry, Thomas and Elizabeth, emigrating from Gloucester GLS ENG to New Zealand. They were travelling on the ship Brother's Pride and landed in New Zealand on 8 Dec 1863.
Geri is trying to find out whether the three siblings stayed in New Zealand or emigrated once more, to the USA. He is aiming to establish whether the William Henry BENFIELD who married Malinda PURDY in 1880 in San Francisco CA USA was the same who had been in New Zealand. William Henry and Malinda had eight children, one of whom was Mary (b.23 Sep 1880). She married Thomas Henry Gilbert in Grass Valley CA USA and there were three children, one being Richard James GILBERT who was Geri's father.
If there is anyone in NZ or UK who can help, Geri would be delighted to have them contact him.

John Thompson has interest in the surnames SHEPSTONE, SHEPSTON and SHEPSON, particularly in areas that are in the north of Somerset and in the Bristol area.
Before 1850, the majority lived in an area bounded by Westbury on Trym to the north (formerly GLS but now a suburb NNW of Bristol centre) and in SOM, Axbridge to the south, Priddy to the east and the Bristol Channel to the west. Apart from the first, the main clusters of SHEPSTON(E)'s in the 1800s were in central Bristol and the North SOM parishes of Rowberrow, Shipham, Nailsea, Long Ashton, Wraxall, Winscombe and Congresbury. Most of these places had connections with mining (lead, coal and zinc ore), quarrying and limeburning, occupations followed by many of these families and their kin.
John would be very pleased to have contact with people interested in these surnames, not only in the area specified above but in broader areas because these folk were following the mining and associated occupations, wherever available.

Stephen Keates has some problems with tracking down James KEATES whose life started in Clayhiden DEV, continued at Wellington SOM with his marriage to Sarah PERROTT, her death in 1847 in Wellington and a second marriage to Caroline LEACH.
From the first marriage, the known children were Mary Ann (b.1835), Emma (b.1837), Caroline (b.1838) and James jnr (b.1843), all born in Wellington.
From the second marriage, the known children were Henry (b.c1849 Wellington SOM) and Hannah (b.c1850 Monmouth MON WLS, no record found yet).
In the 1851 Census for Llanwonno GLA WLS, James Keates is listed as head, aged 40 (but this seems incorrect), Coal Miner born Clayhiden DEV; Caroline, his wife aged 28 born Uffculme DEV; James, son aged 8 born Wellington SOM; Henry, son age 2 born Wellington SOM; Hannah, daughter aged 8m born Monmouth. This led to a dynasty of Keates in the Rhondda up to the 1970s.
Steve would welcome any assistance on the ancestry of James Keates, Sarah Perrott and Caroline Leach.

Diane McDaniel has three John MILLS of interest. Two are listed above to the extent that information is available. John MILLS III was baptised in St Stephen's Parish, Bristol GLS. It is believed he emigrated to America with Captain John Moffatt of Dunster SOM. Moffatt commanded a Royal Navy ship from Bristol in 1723 to Maine and New Hampshire coasts of America to obtain masts for the Royal Navy. Moffatt married and settled in New Hampshire and became a wealthy exporter of furniture and masts.
If anyone has any links with or information about these Mills men and their ancestry, Diane would certainly be interested to be in contact with them.
